When you think of skiing in Europe, one thing comes to mind: the Alps. Stretching more than 750 miles across France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Liechtenstein, and Monaco, this great mountain range is home to some of the world's most superb slopes. The Alpine region attracts 120 million visitors a year, creating a booming tourism industry that revolves around ski and après-ski activities.

In Europe you’ll have your choice of destinations, from quaint villages that have welcomed skiers for decades to newly built resorts where you’ll find cutting-edge architecture and a see-and-be-seen crowd. Some have adopted the all-inclusive model that includes ski lessons and equipment rentals. This can be a money-saving approach for families or groups with skiers of varying skill levels.

In many destinations, the après-ski options are just as important as the skiing itself, and activities range from simple fondue by the fireplace to all-night festivities in nearby nightclubs. Be sure to choose your accommodations wisely so you aren't kept up at night by revelers if you like to hit the hay early. If you want to join the party, opt for a lodge in the middle of a ski village where you’ll have plenty of after-dark options.

While the downhill skiing in Scandinavia doesn’t compare to that in the Alps, it boasts reliable cross-country skiing and a range of other activities like dog sledding and ice skating to keep the entire family entertained. Just keep in mind that being so close to the Arctic Circle can drastically diminish the number of daylight hours. Expect to ski by floodlight for a majority of the day.
