While Africa may not be the first destination that comes to mind when planning a honeymoon, its rich culture and diverse wildlife make it a stunning destination for newlyweds. Tourism has taken off in recent years, offering new luxury lodges, extended excursions, and more frequent transportation between destinations. Our editors have selected the best destinations for honeymoons in Africa and the Middle East.

Kenya has long been a safari favorite, home to the elusive “big five” animals: lions, elephants, buffalos, leopards, and rhinoceros. The Maasai Mara National Reserve is home to all these animals, as well as zebras, giraffes, gazelles, cheetahs, and wildebeest. Regal accommodations near the reserve offers guests supreme glamping. Think luxury tents overlooking sweeping vistas with views of Mount Kenya, world-class meals prepared by a private chef, and nearly unlimited excursion options.

Tanzania offers many of the same safari and lodging opportunities, but with the added allure of Zanzibar. Located off the coast, this chain of small, nearly deserted islands is a breathtaking spot to escape from the world. With turquoise-blue water and sugary beaches, Zanzibar is an ideal honeymoon destination.

If you are interested in seeing animals during your trip, be sure to check migration schedules as well as weather forecasts. A safari is not much fun if the animals have all left, and you don't want to get caught during the rainy season. Additionally, be sure to check any visa requirements - it can often take months to receive a visa.
