Trip Report Alleppey Backwater Cruise at Kerala

Jump to last reply

After a long & hectic work week my colleague and I decided to travel to Alapuzha in Kerala which is sobriquet “Venice of East”. Friday evening we took a KSRTC Volvo Bus from Bangalore to Cochin. We reached Cochin at morning 6.30. From there we took another KSRTC bus to Alapuzha and took an auto and went to Hotel Sisir Palace and got fresh up. Then the time was approximately 11.30am.

There is only 5 minutes from the hotel to Alleppey Finishing point where the houseboats anchored. We walked to alleppey finishing point; there indigenoustour.com/house-boats Guest Relation manager Mr. Saju was waiting for us as per our pre booking. Hundreds of small and large houseboats were anchored. Mr. Saju welcomed and guides us to the houseboat parking area where our boat was anchored. Three crew members were waiting there to welcome us. Mr. Saju introduced them to us. Mr. Podian, boat captain, Mr. Joseph – cook and Mr. Ponnan – helper. All are natives of Alleppey. These people will be there in the boat along with us for the next one day & night.

The exterior views of houseboat itself make us happy. The bottom part or hull is made of wooden planks and painted black. And the top or roof is made of weaved palm leaves and bamboo poles .There is beautiful windows. The front part of the boat is wide and open. There is a sofa set were travelers can sit and enjoy the sight seen. Behind that there is a dining table with a fruit basket. The boat started cruising at 12 pm. Joseph and his helper brought us tender coconut as welcome drink which is the desi drink of Kerala.
The cruising was through the narrow canals of Punnamada Lake. Both sides of the canal were coconut lagoons. Travelling between these coconut lagoons was really mind-blowing. After traveling sometime through this narrow canal we reached to a wide lake. One side of the lake is paddy fields. These paddy fields are situated below the sea level. The lake and paddy fields are separated by a mud bund. Crew invited us for lunch, Kerala style rice with different vegetable curries and pearl spot fish fry. Beautiful scenes and delicious food relaxed our mind and body. Boat entered into more rural village areas. The local houses and their life style of villagers were interesting. People in this villages use small boat for transportation. In front of every house there is a small boat called ‘Kothumbuvallam’.
Suddenly the climate changed and started raining. The outside visuals show the mystic beauty of nature. Sinu was trying to catch fish using fish hook. Atlas he got a small fish and he was over excited as if he got a shark. Cruising stopped at 5.30pm and anchored near an island. We took an umbrella and walked through the island enjoying the beauty of island. Chapattis, chicken curry and dhal fry were there for the dinner and started watching TV. At 9pm we went to our bedroom and Mr. Ponnan switch-on the AC.

Next day morning after breakfast we disembarked from the boat moved to Bangalore.
